S for Spain. Spanish victims of National Socialism

The project focused on the fate of Spanish Republicans who had to perform forced labor under National Socialism or were deported to concentration camps. Three events were held to shed light on this little-known history in order to raise awareness among the Spanish-speaking population in Germany and highlight the importance of the culture of remembrance.

Two guided tours of the "Red Spaniards" exhibition led by historian Antonio Muñoz Sánchez. An exhibition that reconstructs the history of tens of thousands of Spanish exiles who were imprisoned in France during the Second World War, forced into forced labor or deported to German concentration and labor camps.

Conference on democratic memory in the 21st century and tribute to Francisco Largo Caballero

Commemoration of Francisco Largo Caballero, former President and Minister of the Spanish Republic, whose anti-fascist commitment led him, like almost 10,000 other Spaniards, to the concentration camps of the Third Reich. The tribute and conference included wreath-laying ceremonies and lectures by renowned historians on Largo Caballero's life, Spaniards in the Sachsenhausen concentration camp, forced laborers and Spanish women in the camps. At the end, experts discussed the challenges of remembrance politics and its relevance for democracy.

A guided tour of the Sachsenhausen concentration camp memorial, which shed light on the history of the camp and the fate of around 200 Spanish prisoners. The visit paid tribute to the role of the survivors of the Spanish Republic in restoring historical memory.
